ليبيا Libya

Central Bank of Libya

On 18.02.2019, the Central Bank of Libya introduced a new 1 dinar polymer note celebrating the 8th Anniversary of the First Libyan Civil War (2011-2019). This civil war is also referred to as the Libyan Revolution or the 17 February Revolution. This civil war was started by those who sought to oust the Colonel Muammar Gaddafi government. The revolution started in February 2011 and ended on 23.10.2011 with the capture and death of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.

Colonel Muammar Gaddafi came to power in 1969 when he ousted the then Libyan King Idris l (1889-1983). He was only 27 years old when he came to power. He then went on and ruled the country as a dictator for 42 years until his own downfall in August 2011 (aged 69) when he was captured and killed in Sirte by the rebel militia from Misrata. Sirte is a town about 452 km east of Tripoli and was then considered a stronghold of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.

The designs of the note
Front -  Central Bank of Libya building in Tripoli. See-through window with the image of Omar Mukhtar (1858-1931), a hero of the Libyan Resistance.
Back - Brega Oil Refinery and the Arch of Marcus Aurelius in Tripoli.

This is the first time that Libya has issued a polymer banknote. Printed by De La Rue.
